I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Georgia with 22 years of experience as a counselor.
I earned my Master of Social Work (MSW) from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, after earning my bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity project in Nicaragua, assisting in the development of Habitat’s first housing project in Nicaragua. I stayed in Nicaragua working in another non-profit organization, Witnesses for Peace, in war zones.
After experiencing the effects of war and a hurricane in Nicaragua, I returned to the US to study how to facilitate a process of emotional recovery from experiences of trauma and loss. I received a scholarship to study at FSU with one of the world’s leading trauma therapists, Dr. Charles Figley, founder of the Green Cross Project and the Trauma Institute.
There, I was trained in various techniques for working with trauma, such as EFT, CBT, and EMDR.
Through Green Cross, I provided crisis intervention and brief trauma therapy after 9/11 in New York, with survivors in a labor union, some of whom worked at the Twin Towers. Since completing my studies, I have been providing individual, couple, and family therapy in English and Spanish for 22 years, in various capacities, including an agency that works with survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Florida, and later in various communities in Nicaragua affected by Hurricane Mitch.
I have also worked in a community mental health clinic with people with severe mental disorders such as major depression, bipolar, or schizophrenia and more recently in non-profit agencies with clients with a wide variety of problems such as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, abuse sexual or domestic trauma, and loss, as well as family problems, or work-related or behavioral problems of children and adolescents at school.
In addition to working on emotional recovery with survivors of abuse or other crimes, I wrote letters to accompany U-Visa and VAWA applications, or petitions to appeal deportation. I love working with individuals, couples, and families, children, teens, and adults, taking on an eclectic perspective that utilizes their strengths while working with my clients’ needs, preferences, and goals.
